Finalist - Krzysztof Penderecki International Composers’ Competition ARBORETUM

Human caused climate change is affecting our oceans in drastic ways. This work focuses on Greenland’s receding ice sheets, which affects ocean currents, sea level and water temperature. By humanizing and dramatizing these ice sheets and glaciers through my music, my goal is to bring awareness to this very important topic. By stirring with the listener’s emotions, my goal is to awaken the listener’s desire for climate activism as well as bring out their nurturing qualities for our planet.

The opening minute is a long sustained and very slowly changing massive chord. This is my interpretation of an aerial view of the vast ice sheets. This chord is interrupted by either the sounds of ocean waves or the intensity of burning sun. The interruptions morph into my interpretation of warm oceanic water ever more intensely eating away at edges of the ice sheets. The intense middle section is an aural depiction of a calving glacier. This is followed by the never-ending cycle of warm oceanic water eating away at the ice. In the last section we arrive back to the aerial view of the ice sheets, however now the sheet is smaller than it was before. The work ends on the sounds of ocean waves reminding us that the sea levels are slowly yet relentlessly rising.
